SANTO DOMINGO COFFEE PLANTATION Santo Domingo Coffee Plantation is located in Venezuela in a village named Caripe. Caripe, in Indian Language, means squirrel-river. It was founded in 1717 by the Monks Capuchinos Aragoneses, who were the first people to plant coffee trees. When Alexander Humboldt, a German naturalist and explorer, visited Caripe in 1799 he got amazed by the beauty of its forest. He also got impressed by "la Cueva del Guacharo", a huge cavern named after a nightbird called "Guacharo." This bird lives inside the cavern, and after sunset the Guacharos leaves the cavern for food.
The Plantation area is about 90 hectare (222 acres) totally planted with Arabica type coffee. The varieties of plants are known as Typica, Bourbon and Catuai. All of the Coffee plantation is surrounded by shade trees. Most of the shade trees are known as Guamo, Bucare and Anauco. One of our main objectives is to preserve nature, leaving space for an ecosystem. Two natural springs emerge in the plantation, keeping a constant flow of water all year. This water is used to wash the coffee.
