SANTO DOMINGO COFFEE PLANTATION

Santo Domingo Coffee Plantation is located in Venezuela in a village named Caripe. Caripe, in Indian Language, means squirrel-river. It was founded in 1717 by the Monks Capuchinos Aragoneses, who were the first people to plant coffee trees. When Alexander Humboldt, a German naturalist and explorer, visited Caripe in 1799 he got amazed by the beauty of its forest. He also got impressed by "la Cueva del Guacharo", a huge cavern named after a nightbird called "Guacharo." This bird lives inside the cavern, and after sunset the Guacharos leaves the cavern for food.

Natural stream on the plantationSanto Domingo Coffee Plantation has an altitude between 1.200 and 1.300 Mts. (3.937 feet and 4.265 feet) above the sea level. Its precipitation is about 1.300mm. with an average weather of 19 degrees C (67 degrees F). The rainy season goes from May to January, and the coffee crop usually starts in October and ends in January.

The Plantation area is about 90 hectare (222 acres) totally planted with Arabica type coffee. The varieties of plants are known as Typica, Bourbon and Catuai. All of the Coffee plantation is surrounded by shade trees. Most of the shade trees are known as Guamo, Bucare and Anauco. One of our main objectives is to preserve nature, leaving space for an ecosystem. Two natural springs emerge in the plantation, keeping a constant flow of water all year. This water is used to wash the coffee.

Santo Domingo Plantation HouseAll the coffee is processed after a severe control of the harvesting in the wet beneficio. Inside the benficio the coffee is depulped, fermented, washed, dried, and hulled, with constant supervision to obtain the best quality of coffee. Finally, after these processes we obtain one of the most delightful coffees in the market named "Tumiqui Coffee." Tumiqui comes from the abbreviation of the Turumiquire Mountain, where Santo Domingo Coffee Plantation is located.
