Papua New Guinea

ORGANIC PUROSA

Papua New Guinea's indigenous population can document their history back to when the country was attached to the Asian mainland and nomadic tribal peoples freely migrated from Asia to Australia. There were no known visitors until Polynesian sailors arrived and began settling the coastal areas about 6'000 years ago. Spanish and Portuguese explorers first visited in the 16th century, but European nations did not establish a permanent presence on PNG until 1884, when Germany and Britain annexed the northern and southern portions of the island. Exploration and European settlement of the highland regions was well under way by the 1930's although significant commercial and social development did not really begin until the 1950's PNG attained its Independence from Australia in 1975.

Geographically, Papua New Guinea lies just south of the Equator. Between the altitudes of 4'000 to 8'000 feet in the Highlands Region, the volcanic soils and favorable climate provide an excellent growing environment for coffee. The coffee harvest in Papua New Guinea occurs during the months of April through September each year. The highly favorable growing environment in the Highlands can encourage coffee bearing that lasts well into the latter part of the year. The bulk of Papua New Guinea's production, over 70%, is small-holder village grown coffee that is processed by individual farmers and purchased at the farm gate by mobile buyers or at town depots. This system maximizes the returns to the local farmers.

Organic Coffee has added to the Papua New Guinea mystique. New markets are opening up as consumer preferences tend towards chemical free products. More than 1000 village farmers are registered with our supplier and annual inspections are carried out by NASAA (National Association for Sustainable Agriculture of Australia), the certifying authority. NASAA is fully credited and accepted by the international organizations of IFOAM and meet with the European Community (EC) and USA standards for organic produce.

The Organic A & X Grades which we offer are processed at our suppliers mill located at Purosa in the Okapa Valley within the Eastern Highlands Province. Our Organic coffee is a fully washed Arabica with a clean, well balanced acidity, distinct floral/citric flavors and a nutty body.

We are pleased to note that this PNG received the "…highest level of enthusiasm and rating from the Coffee Review Cupping Panel, equal only to the response provoked by the best coffees from Kenya, Guatemala and Ethiopia…Caramelly and floral aroma, sweet and bright acidity, creamy and full body with floral, fruity, complex and balanced flavor…"
