SHB ESTATE BOQUETE ‘KOTOWA ESTATE’
This coffee is grown in the highlands of Boquete at 4500 feet, in a mountainous area famous for its year round cool climate.

A family traditionAlexander Duncan Macintyre, Canadian by birth, who had held a number of important political positions in his country, was longing for a change in his active and hectic life. One day in April 1918 he read a newspaper article about a region called Boquete, in a distant country of Central America named Panama. He read about a mountainous area on the slopes of a mysterious volcano, an unexplored region with a consistently cool climate. His curiosity led him to visit the region, where he fell in love with the area, the people, and the magic of the valley. Using his wit, his savings and technology of the time, he channeled the water of the Rio Cristal to produce the hydraulic force needed to run his pulley driven coffee mill or “beneficio.” Although the original coffee mill stands, it has been upgraded to take advantage of modern technology in order to sustain the very high levels of preparation for which Boquete is noted. For three generations Alexander's family has cultivated and processed in the same traditional way and is proud to offer a truly special coffee.

The combination of rich, deep soils, climate and altitude develops a coffee with good body, rich aroma, and sweet acidity. The cherries are hand picked by Ngobe indians, who harvest the same trees up to five times per season to guarantee that only the ripe beans are selected. The harvested cherries of KOTOWA ESTATE are pulped and processed daily to develop a very uniform coffee.

Medical Truck in PanamaKOTOWA means “Mountain” in the Ngobe Language. In order to assure a clean, safe and sustainable environment, no type of chemical insecticides or herbicides area used, and around 500 acres of untouched virgin rainforest are kept as a wildlife sanctuary.

We invite you to be enchanted...
