SBH ESTATE 'MONTANA VERDE'
It was some 10 years ago that the Reforestation Project known as Recafe S.A. generated interest in a small, high altitude coffee range on the island, topped by Pico Duarte, which exceeds 10,000 feet in altitude. The area in question, near the mountain town of Constanza, had been devastated by deforestation, the rivers had run dry and the soil had started to turn to dust. The company, however, purchased land totaling some 400 hectares and started planting it with Arabica coffee. At an altitude of 3'500 - 4'500 feet, it represented one of the first quality oriented coffee plantations in the country.

The plantation took some seven years to mature and not only did the bushes thrive, but the rainfall began to increase and the man-made arid zone started to revert to its former lushness. Through leadership and vision, Recafe has succeeded in encouraging other farmers in the same area to plant Arabica coffee and has helped revitalize the area while producing a truly superb cup of coffee known as 'Montana Verde'.

Based on the Caribbean Microclimate the actual harvest starts in November and lasts through June, almost eight months - therefore almost guaranteeing a year-long supply.
